This page holds California's open adapted physical education jobs, plus the credential, employers, and pay data an APE specialist should know first.

The APE Specialist Credential

California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) grants the Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential. Until April 1, 2026, CTC called it the APE Added Authorization. Regulations that took effect that day restored the older title, and holders of an Added Authorization keep the same authorization statement (CTC leaflet CL-623).

The credential lets you assess progress toward physical education goals, teach, and give special education support to students who cannot take part in general PE or a specially designed PE class. It covers birth through age 22, including preschool and classes organized for adults.

You add it on top of a prerequisite credential. CTC accepts a Single Subject in Physical Education, a Multiple Subject, or an Education Specialist Instruction Credential, among others. You then:

  • complete a Commission-approved APE program, whose university submits your recommendation online
  • take 12 semester units of physical education coursework, with at least 3 in kinesiology and 3 in motor development, if your prerequisite is a special education credential

A Single Subject credential with a supplementary authorization in sports and games or introductory PE does not qualify. The APE credential stays valid while your prerequisite credential does.

The service and your employer

Education Code §56363 lists adapted physical education among the state's designated instruction and services, California's term for related services. Title 5 regulation §3051.5 reserves APE for students who need developmental or corrective instruction and cannot join general, modified, or specially designed PE. The same rule lets you consult with students, parents, and teachers on the aids and modifications a student needs to join regular or specially designed PE. It also bars anyone without a CTC credential authorizing APE from providing the service.

Districts organize special education through special education local plan areas. Under §56195.1, a district joins a plan with other districts or with its county office of education, and county offices and districts may contract with each other for services. Your employer may be a district or a county office. EdJoin lets you search California postings by either one.

Pay

Digest table 211.60 from the National Center for Education Statistics estimates that California public school teachers averaged $87,275 in 2021-22, the newest year the table covers. Before an interview, request the certificated salary schedule from the district or county office that posted the job.

Related services

Section 56363 lists physical and occupational therapy and recreation services as separate designated instruction and services.

What we collect

You can browse a limited number of jobs as a guest; a free account unlocks the full board. When you use Quick Apply or create an account, we collect what you enter: your name, contact details, preferences, and resume.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time. We partner with trusted districts and recruiters, and never sell your information to spammers or data brokers.

Retention and deletion

We keep applications and profiles until you ask us to remove them. Email [email protected] and we'll delete your data.

Job listings

Listings are gathered from public school district job boards and link back to the original posting. To report an error in a listing, contact [email protected].

Changes

If this policy changes, the update appears on this page with a new effective date.
