Indiana's open jobs for teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing sit on this page, next to the license, test, employer, and salary facts to check first.

License area and Praxis test

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) licenses this role under the content area Exceptional Needs: Deaf & Hard of Hearing. Its testing chart pairs the area with Praxis 5272, Special Education: Education of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Students, at a cut score of 160 and a $120 fee. The same chart marks the area as one you cannot add to an existing license by passing the test alone.

IDOE's approved program list, updated August 19, 2026, names three places to train:

  • Ball State University, with a traditional program and a post-baccalaureate option
  • Butler University, with the same two routes
  • Indiana State University, through a post-baccalaureate option

Indiana School for the Deaf

William Willard, the first Deaf founder, started the Indiana School for the Deaf in 1843. The Indianapolis campus teaches deaf and hard of hearing students from early childhood through high school. Its careers page sends applicants to the state's Work for Indiana site, or you can email a cover letter and resume to the division listed for the opening.

The Indiana Department of Health runs the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. The General Assembly created it through Indiana Code 20-35-11, and it opened July 1, 2013. The Center follows deaf and hard of hearing children from birth until they leave school and works with schools on communication, language, and education.

Finding district openings

In January 2026, IDOE upgraded its Statewide Educator Job Board in partnership with Nimble. The board pulls teacher postings from across Indiana into one search and shows commute distance and salary schedules.

What Indiana teachers earn

School corporations report teacher pay to the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board (IEERB). Its 2025 report gives these 2024-25 figures for full-time teachers:

  • average salary: $62,528
  • average first-year salary: $50,179
  • lowest reported salary: $40,020
  • average total compensation: $82,508
  • average contract: 184 days

Interpreters in Indiana schools

Indiana's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, part of the Family and Social Services Administration, states that IDOE requires educational interpreters to hold an EIPA rating of 3.5 or above.

What we collect

You can browse a limited number of jobs as a guest; a free account unlocks the full board. When you use Quick Apply or create an account, we collect what you enter: your name, contact details, preferences, and resume.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time. We partner with trusted districts and recruiters, and never sell your information to spammers or data brokers.

Retention and deletion

We keep applications and profiles until you ask us to remove them. Email [email protected] and we'll delete your data.

Job listings

Listings are gathered from public school district job boards and link back to the original posting. To report an error in a listing, contact [email protected].

Changes

If this policy changes, the update appears on this page with a new effective date.
