This guide pairs open Massachusetts jobs teaching deaf and hard of hearing students with the license rules, schools, and salary data behind them.

One license, two tracks

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) issues the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing license at the All grade level. 603 CMR 7.04 splits it into an Oral/Aural track and an American Sign Language/Total Communication track, and sets testing rules for each:

  • Both need a bachelor's degree and a passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills Test.
  • The Provisional license requires a competency review.
  • The Oral/Aural track adds the Foundations of Reading test.
  • At the Professional stage, the ASL/Total Communication track adds a DESE-approved sign language proficiency test.

To reach Professional, you need three years of employment under the Initial license and a one-year induction program with a mentor. If you hold a valid license from another state and have worked three years under it, the same regulation offers a Temporary license.

Where you might teach

Boston Public Schools runs the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The school calls itself the oldest public day school for the deaf in the country and serves students ages 3 to 22 through an ASL and English dual language program, drawing from Boston and surrounding districts.

The Learning Center for the Deaf (TLC) in Framingham operates the Marie Philip School, a bilingual ASL and English program for pre-K through grade 12+, and the Walden School, a year-round therapeutic residential school. Its communication guidelines for employees affirm ASL as the primary language on campus, and all TLC employees receive free ASL classes.

Clarke teaches listening and spoken language and has Massachusetts locations in Northampton and Canton. Its staff work with school-age children in mainstream classrooms and online.

Salary data

DESE's teacher salary report puts the 2023-24 statewide average at $91,014, across about 77,630 full-time-equivalent teachers. The report breaks the figure out by district, so check the ones you are targeting.

A neighboring license

DESE licenses school speech-language pathologists separately, under Speech, Language, and Hearing Disorders. The Initial license requires a master's degree from an ASHA-accredited program, eligibility for the Clinical Fellowship, and 100 onsite practicum hours in a public or approved private school.
