This is where to find open New York jobs teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, plus the state certificate rules and the schools that hire DHH teachers.

The certificate

New York issues a classroom teaching certificate titled Deaf and Hard of Hearing, valid for all grades, pre-K through 12. The State Education Department (NYSED) lists its requirements in the TEACH certification lookup. For the Initial certificate through a college program, you need:

  • a NYSED-registered Deaf and Hard of Hearing program and your college's recommendation
  • passing scores on the Educating All Students test and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Content Specialty Test
  • the child abuse identification and Dignity for All Students Act workshops
  • fingerprint clearance

The Professional certificate adds three years of paid, full-time classroom teaching and a mentored experience. If you progress from an Initial certificate, you also need a master's degree and 12 graduate semester hours in deaf education.

Holders of another valid New York classroom certificate can apply for a Supplementary certificate in the title. That route asks for 9 semester hours of DHH pedagogy, the Content Specialty Test, and a school district's recommendation.

Schools for the deaf

NYSED itself runs the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome, a residential school open 12 months a year for students from infancy to age 21. Every class there follows the 12:1:1 special class ratio of up to 12 students, one teacher, and one assistant, and teachers use both ASL and spoken English, depending on each class.

Private agencies run the state-supported "4201" schools, named for the Education Law section that created them. NYSED's school listing names eight 4201 schools for the deaf: Cleary in Nesconset, Lexington in East Elmhurst, Mill Neck Manor in Mill Neck, New York School for the Deaf in White Plains, Rochester School for the Deaf, St. Francis de Sales in Brooklyn, St. Joseph's in the Bronx, and St. Mary's in Buffalo.

Applying and pay

The Rome school's employment page points to NYSED's own job listings and to OLAS, a K-12 education job board.

NCES lists New York's 2021-22 average public school teacher salary as $92,222, the highest of any state in that table.

Related roles

The Rome school's support staff include an interpreter working between spoken English and ASL, and an educational audiologist who runs hearing exams, checks hearing aids and cochlear implants each day, and works with teachers on classroom acoustics.

Every job listed here is an open New York teacher of the deaf or hard of hearing position.
