Open North Carolina jobs for DHH teachers are listed here, alongside the license area, state pay scale, and two state schools for the deaf.

License area

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) licenses Deaf and Hard of Hearing as one of its Exceptional Children areas. DPI's areas of licensure page notes that Exceptional Children licenses cover grades K-12, and that other states may call the same category special education. You apply through the NCDPI Online Licensure System, which also runs a public license lookup.

The two state schools

DPI's Education Services for the Deaf and Blind (ESDB) runs three state schools, and it splits deaf education by region:

  • Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson serves the east.
  • North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton serves the west. The Morganton school has served the Deaf community since 1895 and describes its staff as fluent in ASL.

Both offer special education, related services, and a boarding program. ESDB also supports school districts that serve students with hearing or vision loss and partners with communities on preschool education. The schools sit under DPI's assistant state superintendent for agency schools, per the ESDB directory.

District jobs and the state pay scale

Local boards of education employ North Carolina's public school teachers, but DPI's compensation page explains that the General Assembly sets a statewide salary schedule every district must pay at minimum. A district can add a local supplement for location, market conditions, or school demographics. Charter, lab, and regional schools may use the state schedule or set their own.

The 2026-27 state schedule sets these annual salaries, paid over 10 months:

  • $48,000 for a teacher with a bachelor's degree and no experience, rising to $59,000 at 25 years
  • $52,800 for a new teacher with a master's degree, rising to $64,900 at 25 years
  • 12% above the bachelor's scale for National Board certified teachers

Interpreters

North Carolina requires a state license to work as a paid interpreter or transliterator, but G.S. 90D-4 exempts educational interpreters and transliterators from that licensing law.

North Carolina's current openings for teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing appear in the listings on this page.
