This page collects open deaf and hard of hearing teaching jobs in Tennessee and explains the endorsement, tests, employers, and pay behind them.

Endorsement 463

Tennessee adds deaf education to a teaching license as an endorsement. The State Board of Education lists it in Policy 5.502 as Special Education Hearing pre-K-12, code 463.

The Board's assessment policy, 5.105, revised in February 2026, asks for two passing scores:

  • a special education core exam: Praxis Special Education: Foundational Knowledge (5355) at 145, or NES Special Education (602) at 220
  • a hearing exam: Praxis Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students (5272) at 160, or NES Special Education: Hearing Impaired (808) at 240

When you register with ETS, name the Department of Education as a recipient with code 8190 and give your full Social Security number. Scores then flow into TNCompass, the state licensing system. The department does not accept score reports you send yourself.

The state school and its outreach team

The Tennessee School for the Deaf (TSD) opened in Knoxville in 1845. The state now runs it as Tennessee Schools for the Deaf, with campuses in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson. The Jackson campus is West Tennessee School for the Deaf. Its employment page sorts openings by campus into certified and non-certified positions. You apply through the Apply Online link at the top of each posting, and the hiring department contacts applicants it wants to interview.

TSD also runs Statewide School Outreach, free to schools through the Department of Education. Staff in East, Central, and West regions consult with any school that asks about its deaf and hard of hearing students, covering instruction, behavior, interpreting, and audiology.

The department's 2025 Annual Statistical Report counts 872 students ages 3 through 21 in special education under the hearing impaired or deaf category. The department suppresses some counts in that table.

Pay

The same report puts the average classroom teacher salary at $60,784 and the average across all licensed educators at $64,634.

Colleagues on the team

Tennessee's hearing impairment eligibility standard requires an audiological evaluation and a speech and language evaluation. The evaluation draws on the parent, the classroom teacher, a licensed special education teacher, a licensed speech language pathologist, and a licensed medical provider or audiologist. For interpreters, TSD hosts an annual Educational Interpreters Institute, now in its 34th year.

What we collect

You can browse a limited number of jobs as a guest; a free account unlocks the full board. When you use Quick Apply or create an account, we collect what you enter: your name, contact details, preferences, and resume.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time. We keep applications and profiles until you ask us to remove them. Email [email protected] and we'll delete your data.
