Here you will find open deaf and hard of hearing teacher jobs across Texas, plus the certificate, sign language tests, and minimum pay that apply to them.

Certificate and tests

The State Board for Educator Certification issues the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Early Childhood-Grade 12 certificate under 19 TAC §233.8. The Statewide Outreach Center (SOC) at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) lists the route: a bachelor's degree, an educator preparation program, the exams, a state application, and fingerprinting.

Texas asks for a sign communication score on top of content knowledge. You pass TExES Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing plus either the Texas Assessment of Sign Communication (TASC) or TASC-American Sign Language.

  • TExES 181 has 100 selected-response questions, 4 hours 45 minutes of testing, a passing score of 240, and a $116 fee.
  • TASC (072) and TASC-ASL (073) are 20-minute one-on-one conversational interviews. TASC requires Level C or higher at specified Texas sites. Both tests have limited administrations during two-week testing periods, so book early.

Regional day schools and TSD

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) counts 53 Regional Day School Programs for the Deaf (RDSPDs). Each RDSPD provides centralized services for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind, and TEA presents the model as a way to make the most of hard-to-staff DHH-certified professionals. One program can serve several districts. The SOC's RDSPD locator shows which program serves each district, and notes that some districts contract for services on their own.

TEA's rules make a Texas-certified teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing a required member of the admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee for any student suspected or documented as DHH or deafblind.

TSD, in Austin, is an ASL-English bilingual school serving children statewide from birth to age 22, with residential and day programs.

Finding openings

The SOC's careers page points to Work in Texas, a portal the Texas Education Agency hosts with the Texas Workforce Commission, and notes that TSD posts its own openings.

State minimum pay

TEA's 2025-2026 minimum salary schedule starts at $33,960 for a teacher with no experience and reaches $55,030 at 20 years, on a 10-month contract of at least 187 days.

Interpreters

Schools must use interpreters certified by the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. To take BEI's written Test of English Proficiency at TSD's Communication Skills Workshop, you need at least 30 college credit hours with a 2.0 GPA.

The listings on this page are Texas's open DHH teacher postings.
