Look through Colorado's open early childhood special education teacher jobs, then check the ages 0-8 endorsement, placement rules, and district salary data.

The ages 0-8 endorsement

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) adds an Early Childhood Special Education (ages 0-8) endorsement to a teacher license. You qualify by completing an approved ECSE program at a regionally accredited institution, with student teaching and a practicum, and by passing three Praxis tests or submitting an approved Multiple Measures alternative for each:

  • Education of Young Children (5534, cut score 163), waivable if you already hold a Colorado early childhood education endorsement
  • Teaching Reading (5205, cut score 159)
  • Early Childhood Special Education (5692, cut score 159)

A coursework route exists for Colorado professional license holders whose early childhood education (ages 0-8) or special education generalist (ages 5-21) endorsement came from an approved program. They complete 24 semester hours listed on a CDE worksheet and show content knowledge through the same exams.

CDE discontinued the older Early Childhood Special Education Specialist (ages 0-8) endorsement and now issues it only on license renewal.

Preschool placements

Colorado organizes special education through administrative units (AUs). Under CDE's placement standards, an AU can place a preschooler with an IEP in any program it judges to meet or exceed those standards. Community programs need a child care center license in good standing, and Head Start programs are exempt from state licensing. An AU that relies on an outside provider signs a memorandum of understanding spelling out each side's duties. The standards also require every special education staff member to hold a CDE license.

Infants and toddlers

The Colorado Department of Early Childhood runs Early Intervention Colorado for children from birth through age 2 with developmental needs. Local agencies deliver the services in their regions, and many of them are Community Centered Boards. A service coordinator guides each family through the process.

Speech-language pathologists work in Colorado schools on a Special Services License for ages 0-21, which requires a master's degree in communication disorders or speech-language pathology.

Job boards and salary

On CDE's Colorado Teaching Jobs page, licensed teachers find links to the CASE Job Center, the Colorado Rural Education Collaborative Job Board, K12 Job Spot, and district job boards.

CDE's staff statistics put Colorado's 2025-26 average teacher salary at $74,909. Non-charter teachers averaged $77,647 and charter teachers $59,709, and the spreadsheet lists every district's figure.
