See Kansas's open early childhood special education teacher jobs, plus the early childhood unified endorsement, provisional license, and employer rules.

Early childhood unified

No Kansas endorsement carries the name early childhood special education. The State Board of Education instead defines early childhood unified as an endorsement that lets you teach in a general education classroom or provide special education instruction and support services from birth through grade three. K.A.R. 91-1-202 places it at the early childhood license level, beside early childhood, prekindergarten general education, deaf or hard-of-hearing, and visually impaired. The high-incidence and low-incidence special education endorsements begin at prekindergarten instead of birth and extend to grade 6 or beyond.

Kansas does not let you add this endorsement by test alone. Under K.A.R. 91-1-209, you need an accredited institution's verification that you completed an approved program, plus a passing score on the state's content assessment.

Starting before you finish

A district can hire you while you are still in a program. The provisional teaching endorsement license for early childhood unified asks for:

  • a current Kansas initial or professional teaching license
  • completion of at least half of an approved early childhood unified program
  • a deficiency plan from a teacher education institution
  • proof that the district employed you and assigned you to teach in that area

That license lasts two years.

Districts and cooperatives

Kansas regulations count a child with a disability as school age from age three, so districts owe special education to preschoolers. K.S.A. 72-3411 lets a school board serve those children in its own schools or at home, contract with another district, or join a cooperative agreement with other districts. An ECSE opening can come from one district or from a cooperative serving several.

Birth to three

State law defines infants and toddlers with disabilities as children from birth through age two who need early intervention because of a developmental delay or a diagnosed condition likely to cause one. Under K.S.A. 75-5649, the state's early intervention rules cover contracts with the local agencies that each community's interagency coordinating council designates as providers.

Pay

The National Center for Education Statistics estimates the average Kansas public school teacher salary at $54,815 for 2021-22, against a national average of $66,397 (table 211.60). Ask each district you apply to for its own salary schedule.
