See open educational diagnostician jobs in Texas, with the certificate rules, the evaluation duties, and TEA salary figures for the role.

Earning the certificate

The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) issues the Educational Diagnostician certificate under 19 TAC Chapter 239, Subchapter C. The assignment rule, 19 TAC §231.753, accepts it for a diagnostician post under the name Educational Diagnostician, Early Childhood-Grade 12. The certificate lets you conduct the educational assessments and evaluations IDEA requires for students from birth through adulthood.

A preparation program admits you with a bachelor's degree and a valid classroom teaching certificate. To receive the standard certificate, you need:

  1. a completed educational diagnostician preparation program
  2. a passing score on the certification exam
  3. a master's degree
  4. a valid classroom teaching certificate
  5. three creditable years of classroom teaching

The exam is Educational Diagnostician (253), with 90 selected-response questions, one constructed-response question, and 4 hours 45 minutes of testing time. TEA does not let you add this certificate by exam alone.

Your place on evaluation teams

In Texas the admission, review, and dismissal committee decides eligibility for special education. The commissioner's rule at 19 TAC §89.1040 requires the team that gathers or reviews evaluation data to include an educational diagnostician, a licensed specialist in school psychology (LSSP), or another practitioner certified or licensed in the area of the suspected disability. A team weighing a specific learning disability needs a member qualified to run individual diagnostic examinations, and the rule names the diagnostician, the LSSP, the speech-language pathologist, and the remedial reading teacher.

Hiring and permits

District personnel verify that you hold the certificate the assignment calls for. TEA's hiring guidance lists educational diagnostician among the student services roles that may qualify for an emergency permit. That permit fits two cases: a certified educator serving outside their certification who is registered for the next available exam, or a candidate in an approved Texas preparation program with a deficiency plan. Districts can file permits for a new school year starting July 1.

Pay

The state minimum salary schedule covers classroom teachers, full-time librarians, counselors, and registered nurses, and diagnosticians are not on it. TEA's 2025-26 PEIMS staff salary report shows 6,469 diagnostician positions with average base pay of $78,226, compared with $68,001 for teaching staff. Neither figure includes education service center employees.
