Browse California's open K-12 educational interpreter jobs here, with the Title 5 skill standard, the places schools post openings, and state pay data.

The Title 5 standard

California writes its school interpreter rule into Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. Section 3051.16 describes the job as communication facilitation between deaf or hard of hearing students and others, in the general education classroom and at other school-related activities. To take the job, you need one of these:

  • certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or an equivalent
  • a score of 4.0 or higher on the EIPA, the ESSE-I/R, or the NAD/ACCI assessment

For cued language transliterating, the rule accepts TECUnit certification or an EIPA Cued Speech score of 4.0 or above. The section's current text took effect July 1, 2014.

Check your score report before you apply from out of state. Colorado authorizes school interpreters at an EIPA 3.5, a score that falls short of the California floor.

Where schools post openings

School districts and county offices of education list jobs on EDJOIN, the education job board run by the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association. You can search it by county office, district, or job title.

California also runs two state schools for the deaf. The Fremont campus's jobs page sends civil service applicants to CalCareers, the state's job site, and keeps instructional openings on the school's own pages. The Riverside campus posts its instructional application steps on its careers page.

Pay

California had 5,560 interpreters and translators on payrolls in May 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates. Their mean annual wage was $78,800, and half earned more than $70,770. The count covers all industries and includes spoken-language interpreters.

Related credentials

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing licenses teachers of deaf and hard of hearing students through the Education Specialist Instruction Credential in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing area, covering ages birth through 22. That credential excludes language, speech, and hearing therapy. The Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential authorizes language, speech, and hearing assessments and services, and it requires a master's degree in speech-language pathology.
