See North Carolina's open K-12 educational interpreter jobs here, along with the state's licensing exemption, salary grades, and state school employers.

License law and the school exemption

North Carolina requires a state license to interpret or transliterate for pay. G.S. 90D-4 exempts educational interpreters and transliterators from that requirement. Community, medical, and legal assignments fall outside that exemption.

School standards come from the State Board of Education. The Department of Public Instruction's (DPI) Exceptional Children Division reports on its deaf and hard of hearing hub that the board adopted new minimum standards for educational interpreters and cued language transliterators, effective July 1, 2021. The division names a staff contact on that page for details. It also publishes an evaluation instrument for educational interpreters and transliterators. Districts choose whether to use it.

What the job covers

DPI's Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities list interpreting services as a related service. The definition spans oral transliteration, cued language transliteration, sign language interpreting and transliteration, and transcription services such as CART, C-Print, and TypeWell. For deaf-blind students, it adds special interpreting services.

State salary grades

DPI's 2026-27 state salary schedules place school interpreters in three classifications, with monthly pay for full-time, 40-hour positions:

  • Educational Interpreter I, grade NC05: $2,733 to $4,783
  • Educational Interpreter II, grade NC07: $3,013 to $5,273
  • Educational Interpreter III, grade NC09: $3,322 to $5,814

The State Board maintains these ranges for positions paid from state and federal funds. Local boards of education keep their own scales for these staff and may add local money.

Where interpreters work

DPI's Education Services for the Deaf and Blind runs two state schools for students with hearing loss: the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson and the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. Each campus runs its own special education program, related services, and residential housing.

Related roles

DPI licenses Deaf and Hard of Hearing as a K-12 Exceptional Children area, per its licensure areas page. The same salary schedule lists a Deaf/Blind Intervener I/II classification at grades NC12 to NC14, paying $3,846 to $7,420 a month.
