Browse Oregon's open K-12 educational interpreter jobs, with the state's minimum standard for school interpreters, the programs that hire, and wage data.

OAR 581-015-2035

Oregon has one standard for any sign language interpreter a public school employs or contracts with to serve a student. OAR 581-015-2035 requires both of the following:

  • a score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Test, or RID NIC, CI, or CT certification
  • a bachelor's or associate degree from an interpreter education program or in a related educational field, or a passing score on the EIPA Written test

The rule's definition of "student" covers children with hearing impairments who are eligible for early intervention, early childhood special education, or special education, plus students who qualify under Section 504. The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) adopted the current version in March 2025.

Deaf and hard of hearing programs

ORS 343.236 lets the Superintendent of Public Instruction provide special education for low-incidence disabilities, including deaf and hard of hearing, through local, county, or regional programs without regard to county lines. The superintendent may run a program or contract its operation to a school district or an education service district (ESD).

Under ORS 343.148 in the same chapter, when an IEP team writes or reviews a plan for a deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing child, the parents must receive information about services and placements from four sources: the school district, the ESD, the regional programs, and the Oregon School for the Deaf.

Oregon School for the Deaf

ORS 346.010 directs the superintendent to provide free education for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind at a school in Marion County. The superintendent designates which facilities serve as the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD).

OSD's home page links its job openings to the State of Oregon career site on Workday, along with ODE's career opportunities page.

Wages

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated a mean annual wage of $68,870 for Oregon interpreters and translators in May 2025. It counts interpreters in all industries, schools included.

Related roles at OSD

OSD's Education Support Services team provides ASL communications, audiology, speech communications, counseling, and occupational and physical therapy. The student's IEP team sets which services apply, delivered as pull-out sessions or inside the classroom. The same team oversees ASL assessment, substitute teachers, and 1:1 aides.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time.
