This page lists open K-12 educational interpreter jobs in Texas and the certification a school must see before it can place you with a deaf student.

The certification rule

Texas sets its school interpreter standard in 19 TAC §89.1131(e). If certification exists for the language mode a deaf student uses, the interpreter must hold it, either as a certified member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or through the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI). The rule sets no minimum score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) restates the requirement in its interpreter certification guidance and ties it to the federal IDEA regulations at 34 CFR §300.34 and §300.156.

Testing through BEI

BEI belongs to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services office at Texas Health and Human Services. Its tests check whether you can comprehend, produce, and move between ASL and English with accuracy. You apply with the testing fee, a copy of your driver's license, and an official college transcript.

The Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) hosts a Communication Skills Workshop that prepares you for the BEI written Test of English Proficiency (TEP) and the Basic and Advanced performance tests. Sessions also cover teamwork in schools and the Code of Professional Conduct in educational settings. To sit for the TEP during the workshop, you must be 18 or older, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and have 30 college credit hours with a GPA of at least 2.0.

Regional day schools

School districts operate Regional Day School Programs for the Deaf (RDSPDs) at sites the State Board of Education established. TEA lists interpreting first among the centralized services an RDSPD can provide. The same list names teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing, auditory supports, and physical and occupational therapy. TSD's Statewide Outreach Center supports schools and families across the state.

Finding postings

The outreach center's careers page names interpreter as one of the roles in deaf education. It offers a filter for deaf education openings in RDSPDs and local education agencies, and it points to Work in Texas, a job portal TEA hosts with the Texas Workforce Commission.

Pay

For May 2025, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated a median annual wage of $47,510 for interpreters and translators in Texas. That category includes spoken-language and community interpreters along with school staff.

The listings on this page are Texas's open educational interpreter postings.
