Open California jobs for teachers of students with visual impairments, with the credential, employers, and pay data a TVI should check first.

The credential

California folds the TVI credential into special education. The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) issues the Education Specialist Instruction Credential in the Visual Impairments (VI) specialty area, which covers blindness, visual impairment, and deaf-blindness for students from birth through age 22 (CTC leaflet CL-808CA). That age range puts infant and preschool caseloads inside your authorization along with K-12.

A preliminary credential is valid for five years. To earn it you need a bachelor's degree, subject-matter competence, a Commission-approved Education Specialist program in the VI specialty, a teaching performance assessment, and your program's recommendation. You clear it through a Commission-approved induction program, which assigns you a mentor within your first 30 days.

California School for the Blind

The California School for the Blind (CSB) sits in Fremont. It provides educational outreach through its Statewide Outreach Services program and Education Resource Center.

Its Assessment Center evaluates students statewide. A center assessment takes three to five days of direct assessment, observation, and parent interviews, then a written report and a conference with the family and district staff. The CSB team skips IEP meetings and hands its recommendations to the IEP team to consider.

To apply for a teaching post, you complete CSB's Faculty/Certificated Staff Application and send it to human resources, as the job announcements page directs. Teaching assistant and counselor jobs go through state civil service exams instead.

Applying to districts

EdJoin lets you search education jobs by county office, district, or job title. Gather your work history before you apply. EdJoin warns that the law requires you to list every school district, county office of education, charter school, and state special school that has employed you, including part-time and substitute work, and that leaving one out can disqualify you.

Pay

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) estimates California's average public school teacher salary at $87,275 for 2021-22 (Digest table 211.60). Ask the hiring district for its certificated salary schedule to see where your experience places you.

Orientation and mobility

CTC licenses orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists under a separate credential, the Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential: Orientation and Mobility (CL-610). It authorizes you to teach students who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind to travel at home, at school, and in the community, from birth through age 22. You need at least one year of graduate coursework in the field.

What we collect

You can browse a limited number of jobs as a guest; a free account unlocks the full board. When you use Quick Apply or create an account, we collect what you enter: your name, contact details, preferences, and resume.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time. We partner with trusted districts and recruiters, and never sell your information to spammers or data brokers.

We keep applications and profiles until you ask us to remove them. Email [email protected] and we'll delete your data.
