Current TVI openings in Massachusetts, along with how the state licenses vision teachers and where Perkins School for the Blind fits in.

The license

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) issues a license titled Teacher of the Visually Impaired, valid for all grade levels, under 603 CMR 7.04. You move through it in stages.

  • Provisional: a bachelor's degree, a passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills Test or the alternative licensure pathway, and a passing score on the Foundations of Reading test. For subject matter, TVI candidates go through a competency review. You also show knowledge of how to prepare students with disabilities for general classrooms.
  • Initial: completion of an approved route. An approved program satisfies the subject matter requirement in fields without a subject test.
  • Professional: three full years of employment under the Initial license, a one-year induction program with a mentor, 50 more hours of mentored experience, and further coursework or an approved program.

Teachers licensed in another state can apply for a Temporary license after three years of work under that license, provided they have not failed a required Massachusetts test.

Perkins School for the Blind

Perkins dates to 1829, when it became the first school for the blind in the United States. Its campus sits in Watertown. The school serves students with visual impairments, cerebral/cortical visual impairment (CVI), deafblindness, and CHARGE syndrome from birth through age 22, in day and residential programs.

Perkins also sends teachers into public schools. Its school district services team of TVIs, deafblind specialists, and certified orientation and mobility specialists works one-on-one with students ages 3 to 22 in classrooms, day care, and homes. Perkins reports 25 certified educators on that team, serving more than 500 students in over 125 New England districts each year. The team supports district staff from assessment through the 504 and IEP processes and runs assistive technology evaluations on request. Perkins lists its openings on its careers page.

Pay

DESE's teacher salaries report puts the 2023-24 statewide average at $91,014. DESE divides total teaching salaries by full-time equivalent teachers, and the report gives the same figure for each district and charter school you might apply to.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time.
