This page lists New York's open TVI jobs and covers the certificate, the schools that employ vision teachers, and average teacher pay in the state.

The certificate

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) certifies teachers of students who are blind or visually impaired for all grades. 8 NYCRR 52.21 sets what a registered preparation program for this certificate must teach. Its content core follows either the early childhood and childhood track or the middle childhood and adolescence track. On top of general special education pedagogy, you study:

  • ophthalmologic, optometric, and clinical low vision evaluations, and the major braille codes
  • assistive devices and technology
  • choosing the right literacy medium for each student
  • reading and teaching braille

Programs must also place you with blind or visually impaired students at all four developmental levels: early childhood, childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence.

Schools for the blind

NYSED operates two schools, and one serves students who are legally blind and have additional disabilities. That school, the New York State School for the Blind (NYSSB) in Batavia, opened on September 2, 1868. It enrolls students ages 5 to 21 from across the state, most of them with one disability in addition to vision loss, and works with over 30 school districts. TVIs there support each classroom. Students who live more than 50 miles away stay in the residential program during the week. NYSSB routes job seekers to NYSED's own employment listings.

Section 4201 of the Education Law created state-supported schools, which private organizations operate. NYSED's list of approved schools includes two in the Bronx that serve visual impairment: Lavelle School for the Blind, a day school, and the New York Institute for Special Education, with day and five-day residential programs.

Districts and BOCES

A Committee on Special Education places a student in an approved private school only after finding that the home district, a neighboring district, and the programs of a board of cooperative educational services (BOCES) cannot serve that student. Check district and BOCES postings in the region where you want to work.

Pay

New York teachers earned an estimated average of $92,222 in 2021-22, the highest in the National Center for Education Statistics Digest table 211.60.

What we collect

You can browse a limited number of jobs as a guest; a free account unlocks the full board. When you use Quick Apply or create an account, we collect what you enter: your name, contact details, preferences, and resume.

Cookies and logs

We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to meter guest browsing — never for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites. Our servers and the outside services that run the site — Cloudflare for security and our email delivery provider — see standard technical data such as your IP address.

How it's used

Your application is only delivered to the school district and the local recruiter for the job you chose. If you opt in to an account, we keep your profile so you can apply faster next time. We partner with trusted districts and recruiters, and never sell your information to spammers or data brokers.

We keep applications and profiles until you ask us to remove them. Email [email protected] and we'll delete your data.

Job listings

Listings are gathered from public school district job boards and link back to the original posting. To report an error in a listing, contact [email protected].

Changes
