These are the open TVI jobs in Texas, with the certificate rules and state pay floor a vision teacher should know before applying.

The Texas certificate

Texas calls the job teacher of students with visual impairments, and the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) shortens it to TSVI. The State Board for Educator Certification issues the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments Supplemental: Early Childhood-Grade 12 certificate under 19 TAC §233.8.

A passing test score will not add this area to your certificate. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) lists it among the areas excluded from certification by examination, so you finish a preparation program. TSBVI points to two: Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas Tech University's Virginia Murray Sowell Center, each preparing TSVIs and orientation and mobility specialists.

The work

TSBVI's list of TSVI duties includes functional vision evaluations and learning media assessments with written reports, instruction in expanded core curriculum skills, and getting braille or large-type texts to students on time. You also coach parents, general education teachers, and classmates on how a student with a visual impairment learns.

Employers

TSBVI in Austin is both a state agency and a school district. Its campus enrolls students ages 6 through 22, and residential students live there from August to May. Its outreach staff offer training and consultation across the state to families and educators of students who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision. To apply, you download the fillable State of Texas application from the careers page and email it with your resume.

Outside TSBVI, you apply to school districts. TEA leaves employment decisions to the local level, and each district's human resources office checks that you hold the right Texas credential for the assignment. Apply through the posting district's own portal.

Pay

On TEA's 2025-2026 minimum salary schedule, a teacher on a 10-month contract earns at least $33,960 with zero credited years and $55,030 at 20 or more. No district may pay below the step for your years of experience. The contract requires at least 187 days of service.

Related roles

Orientation and mobility specialists teach students to travel with safety and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar places, and they work with the TSVI on the travel portion of the functional vision evaluation. Texas also created a Deafblind Supplemental: Early Childhood-Grade 12 certificate, which TEA could first issue on September 1, 2025.

Every job listed on this page is an open TVI position in Texas.
